Why is it called Super Bowl XL?

by Jeffrey P. Bigham

With Super Bowl XL right around the corner, I thought some of us may wonder why it's called "Super Bowl XL" this year. Rest assured that, while the Super Bowl is always big, it's not extra large this year. The XL is roman numerals for 40 meaning that this is the 40th Super Bowl in the history of Super Bowls. L in roman numerals means 50 and when there is a lesser value in front of the a larger one in a roman numeral (X=10 is less than L=50) the lesser amount is subtracted from the greater. In twenty years, we'll be having Super Bowl LX which will be the 60th Super Bowl.
